  Artist Statement

I have always enjoyed art at many levels. The subject represented is important to me, but not the single, nor necessarily the most important element in the art work. I find the evidence of the brushwork very interesting, the colors exciting and the relationship of the colors to each other stimulating, and the overall effect - the impression - the most satisfying.

Early in my life I saw large movie set paintings. I got to see them from the location of the cameras, where they looked like dramatic mountains or vast deserts of the American west. I also got to examine them close up where I saw the loose paint put on with six-inch house brushes. I was fascinated with these paintings at both perspectives, and most intrigued that the wild patches of paint when seen from a distance were convincing landscapes.

To this day, art to me is about what is beautiful, interesting, and enduring, yet also about what entertains my eye and engages my mind. I like both the experience during the painting process and the result of that effort. I don't want to conceal the painting process; instead, I want to be able to see it in the finished work. The impression of the painting and how it was achieved are the dual joys of art.
